Programs offered by SafePlace
We serve to empower victims and their families to break the cycle of domestic violence. To that end,
we provide secure shelter and the following on-going direct services.

For victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Included in this program are:

Bi-Lingual Services
SafePlace employs a Bi-lingual Advocate who provides much needed services to our growing Hispanic community. Available for any SafePlace program, this Advocate helps alleviate the fear and confusion brought on by the language barrier.
Sexual Assault Advocacy
This program provides a Sexual Assault Victim's Coordinator to assist victims with services (medical, psychological, legal, etc.). The Victim's Advocate supports victims of rape, sexual assault and harrassment, and incest through peer counseling, resource library, and court advocacy and assists victims in finding their way through the maze of Victims Compensation applications.
Transition House
This is a program for families who need additional assistance to become self-sufficient.
Fresh Start
Fresh Start is a program funded by the State of North Carolina to serve displace homemakers. A displaced homemaker is someone who has been dependent on another for financial support for a sustained period and must re-enter the workforce. The program is open to everyone, male or female, who meets the definition of a displaced homemaker. The program is a parternership with SafePlace. Mayland Community College and Job Link. Courses are free to anyone who wishes to improve their employment or employability. Courses include: life skills, job skills, and computer skills. If one qualifies as a dispaced homemaker, financial assistance is available for children, books, tuition, transportation, and uniforms.
Legal Assistance
This is a program to assist domestic violence victims with legal issues. The program coordinator is a Legal Assistant. Lawyers are recruited who agree to provide one pro-bono case per year to assist victims. The program coordinator will assist participating lawyers with case preparations, legal filings, etc.
Safe Seniors
This is a program that addresses the problems associated with Elder Abuse. Elder Abuse encompasses many aspects of abuse, from physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and neglect. The causes and perpetrators are varied but the purpose is the same" power and control. Safe Seniors serves to educate seniors and the public at large, identify those being victimized and those at risk of being victimized and to provide services and referrals to those who are in need of them. Our hope is to Mitchell County a safe place for all of its citizens.
