Myths & Facts About Domestic Violence



Myth: Domestic violence is not a wide spread problem in this country.


Fact: Every 15 seconds a woman is beaten by her current or former husband or partner  every 38  seconds a man is abused by an intimate partner.


Myth: When someone hits another, its usually nothing serious-just a slap or a punch.


Fact: 1/3 of all homicides in the US are from domestic violence.


Myth: Domestic violence occurs primarily in poor and/or minority families.


Fact: Battered women and men come from all race, class, age, educational,religious
backgrounds.


Myth:  People who remain with violent people are asking to be abused.


Fact: Many people stay in violent homes because they are trapped and feel helpless and              hopeless. Economic circumstances, financial dependency, lack  affordable housing for               them-selves and their children, the risk of being murdered, etc. contribute to remaining                with an abuser.
